September 2, 2022 - by Samir Prakash

Many a users reported a problem where they can’t log-on using the Guest account to a Windows 10 PC or to a Domain Controller with any other user than the Domain Administrator. They receive the following error:

“The Sign-in method you’re trying to use isn’t allowed. For more info, contact your network administrator”

The error occurs because by default you cannot sign in locally with any user account that has not administrator permission on the Domain Controller or to a Windows 10 PC. Check below for the instructions on how to bypass the error.

Methods to bypass The Sign-in method you’re trying to use isn’t allowed in Windows 10 issue

To resolve this error, follow the below provided instructions:

Method 1: Allow a user to log-on locally on standalone server

Here are the required modifications that you have to do on the default Group Policy to allow the Sign-in to standard users:

  • Log-in the domain computer as Administrator,
  • Press Win+ R, type gpedit.msc and hit Enter,
  • This will open Group Policy Editor Window,
  • Navigate to Computer Configuration> Windows Settings> Security Settings> Local Policies> User Right Assignment,
  • At the right-pane, double-click at Allow log on locally,

  • In the Allow log on Locally Properties window, click on Add User or Group,
  • Give a permission to specific user(s) to logon locally,

  • Give it a name and then click OK twice to close all the windows,

  • Open Deny log on locally policy the then and make sure it is empty,

  • Close down the Local Group Policy Editor now,
  • Restart the computer or run gpupdate/force command to apply the new Group Policy Settings without restart.

Method 2: Allow a Domain user to log on locally on a Domain Controller

For a domain user to logon locally from a domain controller console, users should have any of the following groups: Account Operators, Administrators, Backup Operators, Print Operators or Server Operators.

Make sure you are a member of one of the above groups if you want to grant a user account the ability to logon locally to a domain controller. We recommend you prefer adding the user to Backup operators instead of the Administrators group to avoid any security risks.
